Installing RILSIM 2.02
You may find it helpful to print these instructions so that you can refer to
them during the installation process.
Preparing to Install RILSIM
- Download the installation module for the language you prefer via the “Get RILSIM”
web page. Installers are available in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.
In most cases it is best to save the installation module on your hard drive, rather than choosing to
run it from the website. This is especially true if you have a dialup connection to the Internet.
- If RILSIM has not previously been
installed on your computer, follow the instructions under “Install the Software”
below. Before you do, please take note of the following important points:
-
If your computer's operating system is Windows 95, be sure to download the installer
that is identified as specifically for Windows 95. The version of RILSIM
developed for later versions of Windows will not run under Windows 95.
-
If your computer's operating system is Windows Vista, Windows 7, or
Windows 8, you must have administrative rights in order to install RILSIM.
This is a result of security policies implemented beginning with Windows Vista. Similar
policies may be in force on your computer if its operating system is Windows NT 4.0,
2000, or XP, depending on how your computer has been set up. If you are the only user or
the main user of your computer, then it is likely that your normal logon gives
you Administrative rights, which includes the right to install or update
any software on your computer. However, if your computer is on a network that you
do not administer, then you may need to seek assistance from a network
administrator before you can install RILSIM.
- If RILSIM has previously been
installed on your computer the first step is to determine its version number. If you
aren't sure how to do this, click here for instructions.
-
If the version number is 2.02 and RILSIM was installed on or after
25 July 2009, STOP. You already have the latest version. If the version number is 2.02
but it was installed before 25 July 2009, you should download the installer of your choice
and use it to upgrade the pre-release version of RILSIM 2.02 to the full release version.
-
If the version number is 1.05, 1.06, 1.07, 2.00, or 2.01,
follow the instructions below to upgrade to the latest version of RILSIM.
-
If the version number is
1.0, one of the beta versions of RILSIM has been installed on
your computer. Your first step should be to remove it from your system
on how to do this). After the beta version has been removed you can return
to these instructions and follow the steps below to install the new version.
Install the Software
-
Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the installation module you downloaded to your hard drive.
Double-click the file name to launch the installation program.
-
Follow the instructions provided by the installation module to install RILSIM. The installation
process has been simplified from previous versions. You are now required only to:
- Read and accept the software license agreement.
- Enter your name and your organization's name.
-
Indicate whether you want the software installed for anyone who uses the computer, or
only for yourself. This choice only appears if you have a Windows NT-based
operating system, such as Windows XP or Vista.
-
Optional: You can also modify the location on your hard drive where the RILSIM
software and associated files will be placed. However, in most cases it is best to leave
the location set at the default, as that is the location recommended by Microsoft.
-
If you would like detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to install RILSIM, refer to
Chapter 1 in the RILSIM User's Guide. You can download just Chapter 1 of the User's
Guide in any of three languages at the following links (it is not currently available in
Spanish):
You might want to print the chapter, which is about 18 pages long, so that you can refer to it
during the installation process. The size of the download is about 0.6 MBytes. These are
Adobe PDF files, so the Adobe® Reader® software must be installed on your computer
before you can read any of the files. If the Reader has not yet been installed you can download
it for free from the Adobe website.
Please note that the description of the installation process in Chapter 1 includes
several steps that no longer occur because the installation has now been simplified.
-
If you are upgrading an existing installation of RILSIM, the
installer will first remove the old version of RILSIM from your computer, so don't
be surprised to see messages indicating that files and registry entries are being
removed. Depending on the previous version of RILSIM that was installed on your
computer, you may be required to confirm one or more of these messages.
-
After the old version of RILSIM has been removed, the new version will be installed.
Eventually a final window will report that the installation has been completed.
You can then delete the downloaded installation module from your hard drive. Alternatively
you can give it to someone else so that they can install RILSIM on another computer.
