List of RILSIM Feature Changes

Most software evolves continuously, and RILSIM is no exception to this rule. Each version of RILSIM brings new features, many of which have been requested by users. The table below provides a comprehensive summary of new features that have been introduced over time as RILSIM has evolved.

RILSIM Feature Changes

Limitations Fixed Versions Affected Resolution Date Added
Inactive Hyperlinks—The About RILSIM... dialog box (opened through the Help menu) contains a web-page address and an email address that could not be activated in the normal way by clicking the hyperlink address. 1.05
As of version 1.06, all hyperlinks have been activated.

In RILSIM 1.06 or later, clicking a web address will open the user's default web browser and load the specified page if an Internet connection is active. Clicking an email address will open the user's default email program and insert the address into the address data field.

Workaround for RILSIM 1.05—Using the mouse, select the entire web address or email address. Click the right mouse button to expose a popup menu. In the menu, select the Copy command to place a copy of the selected address on the Windows clipboard. Open your web browser or email program, click inside the address field, and then use the program's Paste command to paste the address into the field.

Enter Key—Only the Tab key could be used to move the cursor from one data field to the next on RILSIM's data forms. This is because the data forms are modeled on database programs rather than on spreadsheet programs. Database programs typically use the Tab key to move the cursor from one data field to the next. 1.05
1.06
This feature has been added in version 1.07.

In RILSIM 1.07 or later, both the Enter key and the Tab key can be used to move the cursor from one data field to the next. However, only the Tab key can be used to move the cursor from one button to the next. This is because the programming standards for Microsoft Windows stipulate that pressing the Enter key when the focus is on a button must cause the command associated with the button to be executed. This policy is intended to facilitate use of the software by persons for whom a mouse is difficult to manipulate.

Vertical Tiling—RILSIM versions earlier than 2.00 did not permit multiple windows that are open simultaneously to be “tiled vertically”; that is, arranged so that they are displayed side by side in “vertical” windows that are taller than they are wide. The “Tile” option under the Window menu was equivalent to “tile horizontally” and no other tiling option was available. 1.05
1.06
1.07
This feature has been added in version 2.00.

The option available in versions earlier than 2.00 (horizontal tiling only) is the default available to programmers working with the Microsoft Foundation Classes. Unfortunately, horizontal tiling of RILSIM windows is less satisfactory than vertical tiling when you want to display two RILSIM models side by side. Both tiling options have now been incorporated into RILSIM 2.00.

Digit-Grouping Symbol—Only the space character could originally be used as a digit-grouping symbol (i.e., to group digits to the left of the decimal point so that large numbers are easier to read; an example would be 16 108 325.7734). In many countries, either the comma or the dot is commonly used as a digit-grouping symbol, and some countries use the apostrophe or the space character. 1.05
1.06
1.07
This feature has been added in version 2.00.

The user is now able to select the digit-grouping symbol from the following list: comma, dot, apostrophe, or space. A check is made to ensure that the digit-grouping symbol differs from the decimal-point symbol; using the same symbol for both purposes would cause numerical errors.
